Purpose:
Learn to use the "Kansas Library Laws" Web site by creating a library law FAQ, i.e., Frequently Asked Questions list, for your library.

Core skill:
For librarians: I-B-2: “Comply with Kansas statutes and federal laws that pertain to Kansas libraries.” For trustees: "Trustees shall be capable of assessing and adopting policies that will result in the effective operation of the library, in accordance with state and local laws and with the full respect for the Library Bill of Rights."

Eligible participants:
Librarians and trustees.

Repeatable?: No.

Learning component: Attend a CE event or read the following materials.

  • Go to "Kansas Library Laws" Web site at http://kansaslibrarylaws.blogspot.com

  • From the right hand, upper menu, read:

    • "Why follow library law?"

    • "What's on this Web site?"

    • "Legal words."

    • "Legal Responsibilities of Trustees" by the Kansas Library Trustees Association (KLTA)

    • "Legal Issues and Your Library" by the Kansas Library Trustees Association (KLTA)

    • Just the questions in "Create your Library Law FAQ."

Library work component:
  1. Go to "Kansas Library Laws" at http://kansaslibrarylaws.blogspot.com

  2. In the right-side, top menu, print out "Create you Library Law FAQ." This is a Word document. If you have problems opening or printing this document, please contact the Head of CKLS Continuing Education.

  3. The librarian and library board should together:

    1. Answer the first four questions before page 3.

    2. Read the important note on page 3.

    3. Decide which of the questions after page 3 they will answer.

  4. Answer 20 more questions, at least one question from each section of questions.

    • About library boards

    • About library board meetings

    • About money

    • About running the library

      The completed project will answer at least 24 questions: the 4 questions before page 3 and 20 questions after page three.

  5. These questions can be answered by the librarian and library board members together as a group or divided up between the librarian and board members. These questions can be answered in one long session or spread out over months, e.g., answering one or two questions at each board meeting.

  6. Go to the last page of the document. Read the confirmation, “This FAQ is our work.” Before submitting the FAQ, everyone who worked on this FAQ will be asked to sign this statement.

  7. Go to the beginning of the FAQ, answer the first four questions of the FAQ on the printed sheet or on the computer version saved on your computer.

  8. Read the important note on page 3.

  9. Answer 20 more questions, at least one question from each section of questions:

    • About library boards

    • About library board meetings

    • About money

    • About running the library

  10. To receive credit for completing this project, submit the following to the Head of CKLS Continuing Education.

    • Go to the "This is our work" confirmation on the last page of the FAQ. Everyone who answered questions on the FAQ should sign under the last line.

    • A photocopy or emailed copy of your FAQ.

    • The CKLS Head of Continuing Education will check the FAQ.

    • If mistakes are found, they will be identified on the FAQ.

    • The FAQ will be returned for corrections.

    • Submission of a completely correct FAQ completes the project and earns CE credit on the year the FAQ is submitted.
